Woodturning is a bridge between Tony’s childhood spent amidst the majestic rainforests of British Columbia and his life today among the leafy woodlands on Massachusetts’ north shore. What began as a curiosity in pen-turning quickly evolved into an all-consuming passion: reclaiming and “up-cycling” wood of personal, cultural, or historic interest. From turning timber salvaged from historic Essex ships to exploring the vivid grains and textures of native New England hardwoods, Antony’s work is intended to accentuate the characters of the material that tell the story of its past. Under the mentorship of master craftsmen, including renowned Irish woodturner Glenn Lucas, he has honed a style that strives to honor the tree, by showcasing its unique responses to the dynamic forces of nature. Whether it’s a salad bowl, a serving platter, or a decorative potpourri dish, each piece is a unique creation designed to let the wood tell its story.
